As tweeple, we are prone to ask “what’s trending?” When we log into Twitter, we have an insatiable curiosity as to what everyone else is talking about and why. On Tweetdeck, the trending topics even have reasons for why it’s popular. How many of us have already clicked through the trending topics today to find out what people are saying about Peter Falk or the Winnipeg Jets? And who doesn’t want to add their favorite sports memory to the #1goaliwillneverforget conversation?

Recently there was a trending topic that really pulled at the heart strings and even received national coverage, #alicebucketlist. While this teenage cancer patient’s bucket list didn’t actual include being a trending topic, her hashtag helped her check a few things off of her list. With the tweets of celebrities like Katy Perry and Philip Schofield backing her trending topic, Alice’s campaign raised awareness for bone marrow donors and significant funds for Cancer Research. Behold the power of trending topics!
